Mock-up Exhibition Layout

Exhibition Moodboard

Image
To display my work as an exhibition I explored different exhibition layouts and included images of the displays that I thought would work best for me. For example I like the idea of the scattered frames of different sizes. My final A3 image could be the largest image in a frame and I could display others images from the photoshoot in smaller frames. I could also display my mood boards and some Northern Soul images to show my inspiration and process of getting to my final images. I like the idea of the mood boards being hung up using string and fold back clips as that gives a more 'work-in-progress' feel to them, and then the final images in frames is more finalised. During the photoshoot we also took some instant photos on an Instax camera and so these could be hung up in between the final shots.

Location Moodboard

Image
For my location mood board I visited the locations we want to include in our photo and video shoot and took some primary images to include on my mood board. I visited the locations of the Phlegm, Kid Acne and Jo Peel street art pieces that we want to use as back drops. I also visited the vintage stores Mooch Vintage and Vulgar Vintage that we want to use mainly for the video. We want to use vintage stores as they fit in with our concept of my brother and I visiting our favourite locations in Sheffield. I also believe that they fit into 'Sheffield street style' as vintage and thrift store shopping is very popular round Sheffield and a popular trend in general. I also visited Bear Tree Records, a record store as we want to include references to the music side of the Northern Soul scene and will pick out Northern Soul records to feature in our photo/video shoot.

For photography I took inspiration from fashion photographer Barbara Anastacio, specifically her shoot with RJ King. I like how she has focused on the bright colours in the images and so I want to recreate this with the street art backdrops that we are going to include in our photoshoot and also with the bright red jacket that I will be wearing. I also like the feel of her photos in the sense that they are not perfectly polished as some are at different angles and items aren't fully centred and the whole shoot has an overall candid and fun atmosphere to it and so I want to recreate this in our photoshoot. Models Moodboard

Image
For my models mood board I focused on poses that could be used in our photoshoot. I found a blog by Malina Rose that featured poses for a photoshoot that I wanted to try. As we want the photoshoot to be fun and casual I included images of models with props such as leaves. For our photoshoot in Bear Tree Records we could recreate this but with records instead of leaves. Also to create interesting shots with different angles and focus I included an image of a model holding out a pair of sunglasses to the camera but the camera has focused on the models face through the sunglasses. I also included more serious poses that we could use to focus more on full body shots and our outfits rather than effects. Malina Rose Blog

Concept Moodboard

The concept of the shoot is a brother and sister visiting their favourite locations and stores in and around Sheffield to showcase family, whilst including references to Northern Soul and Sheffield street style through the places we visit and the garments we wear. As the brother and sister in the shoot is going to be myself and my brother we are going to visit our favourite street art locations as they are a big element of Sheffield and why we like the city. We are also going to visit our favourite vintage stores, Mooch Vintage and Vulgar Vintage as we both personally love to source our fashion from vintage stores and this is also a big trend around Sheffield and Sheffield street style and a popular trend in general. We are also going to visit Bear Tree Records as my brother in particular likes to collect music on records and we can include Northern Soul music references from here.

Female Styling

Image
After creating my original styling Mood board we reassessed what we wanted our outfits for the photo/video shoot to be and what garments we had available to us and so some of the original items that we were going to include changed. For female styling we decided to stick with wide leg trousers but replaced the denim jeans with black corduroy wide leg trousers as they ended up fitting better with the other styling changes we made. Also the inclusion of corduroy references the popular trend of the 1970s as corduroy was a very popular material in fashion during that time period. We also decided to swap the oversized grey sweatshirt with a cropped black tank top to include the Northern Soul trend of sports vests that people in the scene wore to the all-nighters to help them stay cool when dancing. For shoes instead of white trainers we decided on black platform Doc Martens as they link both of my and my brothers outfits together as we will both be wearing Docs, but they also contrast a

Male Styling

Image
After creating my original styling Mood board we reassessed what we wanted our outfits for the photo/video shoot to be and what garments we had available to us and so some of the original items that we were going to include changed. Therefore I created a more specific mood board for both male and female styling. For male styling we decided to keep the vintage style Levi's jeans, clear frame sunglasses and black denim jacket featuring pin badges. However we decided to include a Fred Perry style polo shirt instead of a plain white t-shirt as we thought that this fits in with Northern Soul style much better as polo shirts were a popular item to wear in the Northern Soul scene. We also replaced the black boots with classic cherry red with yellow laces Doc Martens to reference the beginnings of Northern Soul style which included popular Mod trends, such as Dr. Martens.

Styling Moodboard

For styling we decided on casual outfits both featuring references to modern day trends and elements of Northern Soul style. For example for female styling I included images of wide leg jeans to reference the wide leg Oxford trousers worn as part of the Northern Soul look. During the popularity of the scene it was men that wore the wide leg trousers, but I used this reference for female styling as they are quite a popular trend in modern day fashion. I also included wide leg culottes for more of a modern take on the flowy, full length skirts that women in the Northern Soul scene wore. To keep the look casual I included an oversized plain grey sweatshirt and white Nike Air Force 1s to fit in with today's trends of oversized items and sportswear. For male styling I included vintage Levi's jeans as they are very popular in todays fashion especially when found from a vintage store. These also link to the early origins of Northern Soul style that included elements of Mod style a

MUAH Moodboard

For the make-up and hair for the shoot we decided on a natural look with minimal makeup and either straightened or slightly curled hair. This was because the video and photoshoot are going to be more focused on the styling of the clothes. Also the whole shoot is going to have a casual feel to it and so a casual look will coincide with this. For my mood board I collected images featuring make-up looks including natural but full looking brows, light and minimal eyeshadow and a 'barely there' pink/nude lip.

Concept & Narrative

What does Northern Soul & Sheffield street style mean to me? > Before this project I had only heard the term 'Northern Soul' but never knew what it was or what it meant. > After researching the subculture the aspect of Northern Soul that stuck out to me the most was that everyone that was involved in the scene said that it felt like a family to them. > To me, Sheffield has meant family as my brother lived in Sheffield before I did so I always associated Sheffield with seeing him. > Therefore my brother and I are going to feature in the video and the photoshoot to convey this theme of family. Concept: > To showcase family in a casual/candid way around locations in Sheffield, including references to Northern Soul. Narrative: > Brother and sister walking round Sheffield visiting their favourite locations/stores. > Candid shots: - Flicking through boxes of records in Bear Tree Record store. - Looking through clothes in vintage store -

> We carried out a test styling shoot in the studio and out in Sheffield and used different coloured lights and backgrounds to create different atmospheres and textures. > Afterwards I edited some of the photos on photoshop to make the colours brighter and also played around with shapes and adding patterns into the shots that feature in the original images.
