Northern Soul Style in Today's Fashion
Topman Design SS16:
> Off of the runway, elements of Northern soul style can be found in high street fashion on websites such as ASOS.
> The wide leg trouser that was so popular with Northern soul dancers is very prevalent in women's fashion, but is not really found in men's fashion unlike in the 1970s.
> This collection featured items directly from Northern soul style with models wearing wide leg Oxford style trousers and sports vests that the teenagers of the 1960s and 1970s wore to dance at Northern soul nightclubs.
> One look in the collection even featured a vest that read "Danz like you're Northern" creating a direct link to Northern soul's origins of it beginning and being popular in the North of England.
> Pieces also included sewn on patches which was a signature element of Northern Soul style.
> Gordon Richardson, design director at Topman Design, didn't want his SS16 collection to read as pure nostalgia: it was all about the mix - in his words, "Northern soul mixed with Billy Idol and surfers".
Gucci Pre-Fall 2017 Campaign:
> Inspired by the photographs of artist Malick Sidibé, who in the 60s and 70s captured youth culture in Africa, the Pre-Fall 2017 campaign video reflects the vibrant attitude of the collection. Referencing the spirit of England's underground Northern Soul movement from the 60s and 70s, the campaign explores the freedom of expression found in music and dance. Set in the Mildmay club in London, a colourful dancehall, photographer Glen Luchford together with artistic direction by Christopher Simmonds capture Alessandro Michele's latest collections in a dynamic and spontaneous video and images. - YouTube description
