What is Northern Soul?
"Non- conformity spreads variety - Northern Soul" - Soft Cell
> A music and dance movement that emerged in Northern England in the late 1960s from the British mod scene, based on a particular style of black American soul music, especially from the mid-1960s, with a heavy beat and fast tempo.

> What did a mod look like?

> Mod is a subculture that began in London in 1958 and spread throughout Great Britain and elsewhere, eventually influencing fashion and trends in other countries and continues today on a smaller scale.
> The original mod scene was fuelled by amphetamine and all night dance clubs.

- Mods n Rockers clash in 1964 - Brighton
- Brighton and Sheffield Wednesday - 80s hooliganism.
> Rockers generally favoured 1950s rock and roll, mostly artists like Elvis Presley, Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent.
> Mods listened to 1960s ska music, soul and R&B as well as British bands such as The Who.
1980s:
> Subculture/youth culture of the working class.
> Mods evolved into skinheads.
> SHARP founded in 1987 (Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice) are anti-racist skinhead movement who oppose Neo-fascists and other political racists, particularly if those racists identify themselves as skinheads.
> Mods swapped brogues for Doc Martens
> Braces
> Fred Perry
> Shaved head
> Both Rockers and Mods wore Levi's 501 jeans.
> 80's casuals/Terrace look - the police were still looking for Dr Martens type skinhead look, the casual movement changed all this allowing the Firms to slip off the radar.
> Wore tracksuits etc. because came from northern towns/villages and didn't have much money.
> Soft Cell:
- 80s synth band
- influenced by northern soul
- 'Tainted Love' originally wrote by Gloria Jones (1965) - Mod
- Soft Cell was goth - subcultures crossing over.
> Mods/Rockers/Skinheads genres cross over.
> The Human League are an English synth-pop band formed in Sheffield in 1977, same year as Soft Cell in Leeds.
